The Law of Water

The Illusion of Central Control

Every attempt to control a system perfectly produces the conditions for its circumvention.

This is not a failure of enforcement. It is a fundamental property of complex systems: the act of controlling them changes them.

The Observer Effect

When you measure a system, you change it. When you regulate a system, you teach it to route around regulation.

The Hydra Problem

Cut off one head, two grow back. The more precisely you try to control, the more creative the circumvention becomes.

The only systems that achieve lasting stability are those that work with human nature rather than against it. They do not fight the water. They become the riverbed.
