Trust Without Trustees

What does it mean to trust a system rather than a person? And what do we lose when we do?

For most of human history, trust was personal. You trusted the baker because you knew the baker.

The Rise of Institutional Trust

Then came institutions. We trusted the bank, not the banker. This was an enormous leap—it allowed us to cooperate at scales previously unimaginable. But trustees can betray.

Trustless Systems

Now we face another transition. Systems that require no trustees at all. Systems where trust is embedded in mathematics rather than relationships.

What do we gain? Scale. Resilience. Immunity to certain forms of corruption.

What do we lose? That is the question we have not yet learned to ask properly.
